Pitipana: Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) conducted an inspection visit to the Centre for Defence Research and Development (CDRD) located in Pitipana, Homagama, on Wednesday (Oct 30). During the visit, he was warmly received by Director General of the CDRD, Maj. Gen. Imal Assalaratchi, who presented a comprehensive briefing on the centre’s operations, military-critical high-tech equipment, ongoing projects, and future plans.

According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, the visit also included a discussion where the Defence Secretary engaged with officials to understand the intricacies and innovations being developed at the CDRD. This engagement highlighted the strategic importance of the centre in supporting the country’s military through advanced research and technology.

The CDRD, which operates under the Ministry of Defence, aims to establish a world-class science and technology base to give the military a competitive advantage. It is recognized for its pioneering role in de
livering cost-effective and innovative solutions that enhance national security.

In a gesture marking this significant occasion, the Director General presented a memento to the Defence Secretary. As a parting note, the Defence Secretary inscribed his comments in the Visitors’ Book, reflecting the importance of the visit. The occasion was attended by senior officials from the Defence Ministry, including Military Liaison Officer Air Vice Marshal Padman de Costa, senior military officers, and members of the CDRD.
