Colombo: Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) emphasized the importance of leaders who can transcend conventional military thinking to address modern security challenges during his address at the National Defence College (NDC) graduation ceremony. Highlighting the intersection of traditional military challenges with cyber security threats, climate change, economic security, and information warfare, he stressed the strategic significance of the Indian Ocean Region in global maritime commerce and competition.

According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, the Defence Secretary, serving as the Chief Guest, announced an upcoming transformation at the NDC. Starting next year, the college will open its courses to civil sector officials, acknowledging the collective responsibility of national security and fostering greater inter-agency collaboration. This initiative aims to integrate government officials who play crucial roles in national security into the NDC’s educational framework, promot
ing a comprehensive approach to national security.

The ceremony marked a milestone as Defence Secretary Thuyacontha conferred degrees upon 33 officers from Sri Lanka’s Tri-Services and Police, along with 08 foreign officers, celebrating their year-long dedication and achievement. The NDC is recognized as the premier institution for national security and strategic studies, serving as the highest seat of military learning in the country.

The event was attended by a distinguished gathering, including the Chief of Defence Staff, Tri-Forces Commanders, Acting Inspector General of Police, KDU Vice Chancellor, Defence Ministry officials, members of the diplomatic corps, foreign military dignitaries, faculty members, special invitees, and senior military officials.
