Dhaka: Bangladesh’s information and broadcasting adviser, Zahed Ur Rahman, stated that cricketer and former lawmaker Shakib Al Hasan would receive security upon his return to the country. However, he also issued a harsh critique of Shakib’s political ties with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the adviser, during a government press briefing in Dhaka, labeled Shakib as a ‘rotten’ individual despite his commendable achievements in cricket. “He may be a good player. He is a rotten person who aligned himself with Hasina and remains aligned with her,” Rahman remarked when questioned about Shakib.

Shakib, celebrated as one of Bangladesh’s most successful cricketers, ventured into politics with Hasina’s Awami League, securing a parliamentary seat in the January 2024 election, which faced allegations of widespread irregularities. He was among several former lawmakers and officials linked to the previous government scrutinized after the ousting of Hasina’s administration following a student-led uprising in August 2024.

During the uprising between July and August of that year, at least 1,400 protesters were killed, as reported by the UN. The adviser emphasized that Shakib could return to Bangladesh safely and address any allegations against him through legal channels.

Rahman expressed similar sentiments regarding Hasina, who remains in India. He assured that the former prime minister would also receive full security and have her legal and constitutional rights protected upon her return to Bangladesh. Hasina recently indicated plans to return in December.

“We will ensure her rights, and she will face the judicial process,” Rahman stated. “Whatever decision the court makes will have to be accepted.” He affirmed that the government would uphold the civil and constitutional rights of anyone accused of serious crimes, including Shakib and Hasina.
