Dhaka: Nana Akufo-Addo, former President of the Republic of Ghana, has been appointed to lead the Commonwealth observer group for Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary election and the referendum on the July Charter. Both significant political events are slated to take place on 12 February 2026, promising to shape the future political landscape of the nation.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the Charter represents a post-uprising reform framework that proposes essential political and constitutional changes. The announcement regarding the composition of the 14-member Observer Group was made by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Shirley Botchwey, in London. This followed an official invitation from the Bangladesh Election Commission.

Botchwey emphasized the essential role of ‘credible, transparent, and inclusive’ electoral processes in fortifying democratic governance and ensuring long-term stability. She highlighted the Commonwealth’s commitment to these principles as they prepare to deploy their team to observe the concurrent elections and referendum in Bangladesh. “Our presence in Bangladesh is guided not only by the responsibility to observe but by a commitment to uphold the aspirations of the Bangladeshi people at this crucial moment in their democratic journey, acting independently and impartially to help ensure that their collective will is freely expressed,” she stated.

The Secretary-General also expressed her gratitude to the Commonwealth citizens who have committed the start of their new year to this significant mission in support of the people of Bangladesh. President Akufo-Addo will be accompanied by experts from various fields within the Commonwealth, including politics, law, media, gender, and election administration.

The Observer Group’s mandate is to assess the electoral process’s credibility, transparency, and inclusivity. They will report on whether the elections and referendum adhere to the standards Bangladesh has pledged to uphold, including its national laws.

Upon completing their mission, the Observer Group will submit a report detailing their findings and recommendations to the Commonwealth Secretary-General. This report will be shared with the Government of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Election Commission, political parties, all Commonwealth governments, and be made publicly accessible.
