Dhaka: Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) in a joint drive at Shah Ali Kitchen Market in Mirpur-1 seized and destroyed 40 kgs of shrimp laced with harmful jelly.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the operation was conducted collaboratively by officials from the Department of Agricultural Marketing, Dhaka North City Corporation, Department of Agricultural Extension, Department of Fisheries, and Department of Livestock Services. The team discovered various irregularities across fish, meat, poultry, vegetable, and grocery shops during their inspection.

Unscrupulous traders were found injecting harmful jelly into shrimp to artificially increase their weight, leading authorities to seize and destroy the adulterated stock on the spot. Additionally, the team discovered the liver of a dead goat being sold at one shop, which was also seized and destroyed after proper inspection and confirmation.

BFSA officials noted the absence of price lists at most fish, meat, and vegetable shops. The use of red lights at fish and meat shops, often employed to make products appear fresher, was also observed and immediately removed. The market’s shop owners’ association was given a 30-day deadline to rectify these irregularities, with warnings of legal action if they fail to comply in future inspections.

BFSA Deputy Director BM Ruhul Amin Rimon, who led the operation, stated that these joint drives are conducted monthly as part of an ongoing series coordinated by BFSA with other government departments. “We will continue this activity in the public interest,” he affirmed.
