Dhaka: BNP will take organisational action against its ‘rebel’ candidates if they do not step aside from the election race, party Election Steering Committee spokesperson Mahdi Amin said on Wednesday (January 21, 2026). ‘The time for withdrawal of candidacy has passed. Now discussions will be held by the Election Steering Committee and by the top leadership of BNP. After that, if anyone remains a candidate, organisational action will definitely be taken against them by the party,’ he said.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Mahdi Amin addressed a press briefing at BNP’s election office in Gulshan area, emphasizing the need for unity among party members to support candidates under the ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ symbol. He stated that those who fail to comply will face organisational consequences. Mahdi, an adviser to the BNP Chairman, highlighted the historical context of the party’s struggle for democracy and voting rights, noting that many political activists were previously unable to participate in elections.
He acknowledged internal competition within the BNP as a natural occurrence, given the party’s significant role in restoring electoral rights. Mahdi explained that only one candidate can be nominated per constituency, despite many aspirants having contributed to the party’s efforts over the years. He urged rebel candidates to withdraw to maintain party cohesion.
Media reports indicate that nearly 76 rebel BNP candidates are still in the race across the country, having not withdrawn their nomination papers by the deadline on Tuesday.
