Dhaka: Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, the student wing of NCP, has issued a call to transform the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum into a universal institution that reflects the sacrifices made nationwide during the July Uprising and accurately portrays the events of the 15-year fascist regime.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the organization’s general secretary, Abu Baker Majumder, emphasized in a statement that the July mass uprising was a collaborative effort by students and citizens against fascism. The museum, initially established to preserve the memory of this uprising, was intended to document the oppression under the fascist regime and serve as a universal memorial for the events of July.

Concerns have emerged that the museum might become a partisan historical account. The organization accused the ruling party, BNP, of neglecting significant events such as the historical anti-Modi movement and the killings near the Indian border, allegedly to appease India.

The statement highlighted the absence of notable memories from the primary platforms of the July uprising, particularly the anti-discrimination student movement. It also criticized the museum for focusing primarily on events in Dhaka, thereby overlooking the contributions and memories of individuals from various districts and rural areas. Innovative programs during the uprising aimed at motivating Gen-Z were reportedly not included.

Chhatra Shakti expressed concern that the museum fails to represent the complete and accurate history of the July uprising. The organization urged that the museum should not be used for narrow partisan purposes but should instead serve as a universal representation of the last 15 years’ fascist regime and acknowledge the contributions of people from across the country in the July uprising.
