Kuala lumpur: The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Kuala Lumpur marked Deepavali, the Festival of Lights, on 30 October 2025 at its premises. The event underscored Sri Lanka’s dedication to unity, peace, and reconciliation, while paying homage to Deepavali’s cultural and spiritual significance.
According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Sri Lanka, over one hundred attendees participated, comprising members of the Sri Lankan community in Malaysia, officials from Malaysian institutions, and representatives from various organizations including the Federation of Malaysian Sri Lankan Organisations, Malaysia-Sri Lanka Business Council, Negeri Sembilan Ceylonese Association, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Malaysian Sinhalese Association, Sri Lankan Muslim Professionals and Business Association, Malaysian Indian Tours and Travel Association, and the Jaffnese Co-operative Society. Also present were journalists, private-sector leaders, and other well-wishers.
The Mission premises were adorned with Kolam designs, banana trees, lanterns, and traditional oil lamps, fostering an atmosphere in line with the festival’s theme of light triumphing over darkness. The event began with a Hindu pooja and blessings conducted by Swami Muralitharan Kurukkal from Kajang Murugan Temple, infusing the gathering with spiritual warmth.
Mr. M. I. Mohamed Rizvi, Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, welcomed the attendees and emphasized Deepavali’s themes of renewal and unity. Remarks were also given by Datuk A. Yogeswaran, President of FOMSO, and Mrs. Thana Magendran of MSLBC on the festival’s importance. A presentation on ‘Ramayana Trail – Spiritual Tourism in Sri Lanka’ was featured, highlighting sacred sites associated with Seetha Devi, Hanuman, Ravana, and Rama, aiming to promote Sri Lanka’s spiritual tourism and cultural heritage.
The event also included a classical dance performance by Laasya Arts Academy students, enriching the cultural experience, followed by the distribution of traditional sweets and Sri Lankan cuisine.
