Colombo: A discussion on strengthening Sri Lanka’s humanitarian demining capacity and reviewing matters related to the implementation of the National Mine Action Program was held yesterday at the Parliament Complex under the joint patronage of Hon. Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, Dr. Susil Ranasinghe, and Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd).

According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, the meeting focused on accelerating ongoing demining efforts to support the country’s commitment towards a mine-free Sri Lanka while facilitating safe resettlement, socio-economic development, and the sustainable use of formerly conflict-affected lands. Discussions also reviewed the current progress of the National Mine Action Program and measures required to enhance operational capacity to meet future clearance targets.

Special attention was given to strengthening the operational capability of the Sri Lanka Army Humanitarian Demining Unit through improved resources, personne
l, and logistical support, enabling the program to progress more efficiently towards its planned completion timeline. Participants also discussed the importance of continued inter-agency coordination and stakeholder support in achieving national mine action objectives.

The Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, senior officials of the SL Army, and the National Mine Action Center (NMAC) under the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Water Supply attended the discussion.
