Dhaka: The Dhaka University authorities have suspended three teachers and one university official while relieving four other teachers of all academic and administrative responsibilities over separate allegations.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the decisions were made during a Syndicate meeting on July 28, chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr ABM Obaidul Islam. The Syndicate suspended Prof Dr Sadeka Halim from the Department of Sociology following allegations of unbecoming conduct both inside and outside the classroom, moral misconduct, and other complaints.
Additionally, Prof Dr Md Shafiqul Islam and Prof Dr Afroza Shelley from the Department of Nuclear Engineering were suspended after complaints from students of various batches, supported by the findings of an inquiry committee.
Prof Dr Md Abdul Muhit of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology was removed from his position as department chairman and relieved of all responsibilities due to allegations of actions against the spirit of the July mass uprising, spreading propaganda against the university administration and the government, supporting a banned organization, and issuing threats.
Prof Dr Abu Shara Shamsur Rouf from the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Prof Dr Rafiqul Islam (Rafiq Shahariar) from the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies were also relieved of all academic and administrative duties on similar allegations.
The Syndicate also relieved Prof Dr Mohammad Bahauddin from the Department of Persian Language and Literature of all duties over allegations of various irregularities and plagiarism involving MPhil and PhD theses.
To address recruitment irregularities between January 1, 2009, and June 2024, the meeting formed a committee led by Pro-VC (Education) Prof Dr Abdus Salam. All university faculty deans are part of this committee. Another committee, led by Pro-VC (Administration) Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane, was established to review research activities under the World Bank and University Grants Commission-funded Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) during the same period.
The Syndicate also vowed to take action against those allegedly involved in activities contrary to the spirit of the July mass uprising, with further decisions pending verification.
Separately, the Syndicate suspended AKM Mahbub Mustafa, supervising engineer (Civil) at the Office of the Chief Engineer, due to office discipline violations.
The meeting concluded with the approval of constructing a July Memorial at the Mall Chattar near the university’s administrative building, with the foundation stone set to be unveiled on August 5.
