Dhaka: A Jamalpur court sentenced a father and his two sons to life imprisonment for the 2011 murder of a seven-year-old boy, Suman. The verdict was announced on Wednesday.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the convicted individuals are Abul Kashem, 65, and his sons Mokaddes Ali, 40, and Swapan, 36. All are residents of Maguriapara village under Sarishabari upazila. Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Nezam Uddin delivered the verdict in the case, also sentencing each to an additional five years for destroying and concealing evidence.

The incident traces back to September 3, 2011, when an altercation erupted between the accused and a neighbor, Shabuja Begum, over collecting jackfruit leaves in Maguriapara. During the conflict, the accused allegedly assaulted Begum, and her brother-in-law, Babul Mia, was beaten when he intervened. Local residents eventually separated the parties involved.

Tragically, Suman, the seven-year-old son of Babul Mia, went missing shortly after the incident. Despite extensive searches, he was not found, prompting a general diary filing with Sarishabari Police Station on September 4. The following morning, Suman’s body was discovered in the Jhinai River near Chaparkona Bazar.

Babul Mia subsequently filed a murder case with Sarishabari Police Station, naming five individuals. After an investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against three of the accused. The court’s decision was based on the testimony of 25 witnesses and other evidence, delivered in the presence of the convicts.
