Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon on Tuesday claimed that the February-12 election was the least controversial among all parliamentary polls held in Bangladesh. He shared these remarks during a discussion marking the 2nd anniversary of the July Mass Uprising at the Council Building of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

According to United News of Bangladesh, Swapon stated that Bangladesh has conducted 13 parliamentary elections, with the most recent being the least controversial. Despite this, he pointed out that the country has yet to achieve the desired institutional framework for its executive, judiciary, and legislative branches. He emphasized that Bangladesh has not experienced a stable socio-economic system.

Swapon referenced the 2024 July Mass Uprising, expressing hope that the aspirations inspired by the martyrs’ sacrifices will lead to a stable socio-economic future for the country. He stressed the importance of understanding the causes of past instabilities to prevent future occurrences.

The minister suggested that a research-based perspective on the July Mass Uprising would be a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives. The discussion was chaired by BUET Teachers’ Association President Prof Muhammad Anisuzzaman Talukder, with BUET Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Muhammad Shariful Islam attending as a special guest. Former BUET Pro-VC Prof Abdul Hasib Chowdhury and Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering Prof Md Abdul Jalil were present as guests of honor.
