Dhaka: Nahid Islam, Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Opposition Chief Whip, issued a stern warning on Friday, asserting that the government would not be allowed to remain in power if it fails to address the ongoing energy crisis and provide essential services such as gas and electricity.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Nahid Islam made these remarks during a large public rally held in the Jatrabari area of the city. The NCP leader blamed the persistent national fuel and energy crisis on governmental mismanagement, corruption, and what he described as “unprecedented looting.” The rally, which was organized by NCP’s Dhaka Metropolitan South unit, saw the presentation of several demands, including the implementation of the public mandate, reversal of recent fuel-gas price hikes, and an end to political oppression.

Nahid Islam emphasized that if the government is unable to supply gas, reduce prices, or halt the extortion that is hindering businesses, the citizens would not permit it to continue in office. He accused the administration of being a “fraudulent and treacherous government,” alleging that it deceived the public through the constitution reform committee and was handing over national resources to those who funded its election campaign.

The Opposition Chief Whip also expressed concerns over national sovereignty and foreign relations, particularly criticizing Tarique Rahman’s visit to India without ensuring accountability. He argued that national sovereignty could not be preserved under the current leadership, highlighting its inability to prevent border killings despite assertions of nationalism.

The rally featured speeches from other notable NCP figures, including spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sojib Bhuiyan, Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari, and Abdullah Al Amin MP, alongside various central and city leaders.
