Dhaka: Commerce, Industries and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir on Wednesday called for harnessing the social strength of young people to build a new Bangladesh, saying the opportunity created by the July 2024 mass uprising should be used to establish a democratic, participatory, and accountable state. Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion and reception for families of July martyrs and July fighters, organized by the Sylhet district administration to mark July Mass Uprising Day 2026, the minister said the uprising marked a significant chapter in the country’s political and social history.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the minister emphasized that the government, elected through the people’s mandate, remains accountable to citizens and that sustaining democratic continuity is essential for building a prosperous Bangladesh. Referring to global development experiences, Muktadir noted that countries can achieve rapid economic and social progress through good governance, integrity, visionary leadership, and effective planning. He stressed the need to ensure public participation, accountability, and mutual trust alongside government initiatives.
The minister highlighted that job creation and industrialization are among the government’s top priorities. As part of that effort, a new BSCIC industrial estate is planned on around 187 acres in Sylhet, which will be significantly larger than the existing industrial area. Additionally, he announced plans to establish an artificial intelligence (AI) learning centre in Sylhet to develop skilled manpower and support the growth of small and medium-sized industries.
Muktadir also addressed infrastructure development, noting that projects to upgrade the Dhaka-Sylhet and Sylhet-Chattogram highways and railway links are underway. Once completed, these projects will improve connectivity with Chattogram Port, encourage investment and industrialization, and create new employment opportunities.
On energy sector challenges, he said the government is working systematically to overcome long-standing structural and infrastructure constraints and urged the public to remain patient and supportive. The minister called for engaging the social energy generated among young people during the July uprising in the country’s development, warning against any attempts by vested interests to mislead them. “Youth patriotism, innovation and participation will be among the key foundations of Bangladesh’s future development,” he said.
The programme, chaired by Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Md Abdullah Al Mamun, was attended by lawmakers, senior civil and police officials, local government representatives, political leaders, families of July martyrs, July fighters, and members of civil society.
