Dhaka: National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam announced on Monday that if former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina returns to Bangladesh from India, she will be taken directly from the airport to the gallows by students and the public.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Nahid made this statement during a discussion titled ‘One-Point Demand in the Voice of Martyrs’ Families and the Injured’, held at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium in Kakrail. He also remarked that if Prime Minister Tarique Rahman arranges Hasina’s return through a deal with Delhi, they are prepared to carry out her execution.
Nahid emphasized that families of the 1,400 martyrs and 30,000 injured fighters from the July uprising will protest in the streets until Hasina’s execution is carried out upon her return. He accused the BNP government of protecting its own misdeeds similarly to how the Awami League did in the past. He noted that BNP leaders have admitted that corruption and bribery have persisted over the last five months.
The NCP leader criticized the portrayal of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman as innocent while blaming others, a tactic he claims was once used to defend Hasina. He mentioned ongoing public suffering due to household gas shortages, electricity issues, and pervasive politicization within institutions like the police.
Nahid accused the current administration of widespread extortion and corruption, stating that the only change in the past two years has been Tarique Rahman’s return from London to assume the role of prime minister. He expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s lack of initiatives for families of martyrs, arguing that the BNP has yet to take action for the martyrs and the injured.
He stressed that the families of martyrs, who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of the people, are a national asset and not tools for anyone to gain power. Nahid reiterated that their movement was not launched to gain power but to abolish the fascist system and prevent the country from becoming a haven for autocracy, corruption, and extortion.
The discussion also featured other notable attendees, including NCP Member Secretary Akhter Hossen, Chief Organiser for Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, Northern Region Sarjis Alam, Jatiya Nari Shakti Member Secretary Mahmuda Mitu, its Chief Organiser Nusrat Tabassum, and members of martyrs’ families.
