Kandy: The ‘Sannasa’ (scroll) marking the successful conclusion of the annual Kandy Esala Maha Perahera of the historic Sri Dalada Maligawa and the Sathara Maha Devala was ceremonially presented to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the President’s House in Kandy.
According to News.LK, Diyawadana Nilame of Sri Dalada Maligawa, Pradeep Nilanga Dela, formally handed over the Esala Perahera Sannasa to the President. Accompanying the Diyawadana Nilame were the Nilames of the Sathara Maha Devala and the Pitisara Devala, who joined in the procession to the President’s House.
To commemorate the event, President Dissanayake planted a sapling at the President’s House and engaged in customary activities, including a group photograph with the Nilames and presenting gifts and awards to artists participating in the Perahera. The President also extended financial support to the ‘Pitisara Devala’ through the ‘Esala Perahera Trust’ and received the 20th edition of the ‘Sacred Dalada Culture.’
In his address, the President emphasized the importance of preserving Sri Lanka’s heritage and culture, particularly the Esala Maha Perahera festival. He remarked on the need for the nation to embrace advancements in science and technology while preserving its historical legacy to shape a distinct future.
The President highlighted the cultural significance of the Dalada Perahera and its role in engaging the public, especially the youth, in cultural heritage. He stressed the importance of fostering an environment that allows public engagement with history and culture.
President Dissanayake also mentioned the need to separate politics from cultural institutions to preserve their historical significance. He expressed gratitude to religious leaders and all who contributed to the successful completion of the Perahera, acknowledging the support of the Mahanayake Theros, Diyawadana Nilame, and other Nilames.
The ceremony was attended by key figures, including Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, Governor of the Central Province, Prof. Sarath Abeykoon, Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Kandy District Secretary, Indika Udawatta, government officials, security force representatives, and other invited guests.
