Dhaka: Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi had a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman at a state guest house on Sunday.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the meeting was pre-arranged, and the specifics of the discussion remain undisclosed. This diplomatic engagement comes amid fresh tensions between Dhaka and New Delhi following comments made by former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during a visit to New Delhi. Her remarks have sparked strong reactions within Bangladesh.

On August 6, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam highlighted the importance of maintaining constructive engagement with India, emphasizing the multitude of bilateral issues that necessitate ongoing dialogue. “We want our relations… because we have many issues with India, many bilateral issues – water, energy, and the border – that need to be resolved through discussion and dialogue,” she stated.

Shama Obaed further remarked on the broader scope of Bangladesh’s relationship with India, noting that the current tensions do not overshadow the multifaceted aspects of their bilateral engagement. “A country has many aspects to its relationship with another country. We need to have a lot of dialogue with them, and we need to hold discussions. We have cooperation on energy, we have a major issue with them over water, and there are issues on the border – these have to be resolved through discussions,” she added.
