Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday emphasized the responsibility of every political party, individual, and group supporting democracy to uphold the unity established during the 2024 July Mass Uprising. He highlighted the national unity forged through the sacrifices made on the streets, urging all to preserve this at any cost.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Prime Minister’s message was delivered on the occasion of the 2nd anniversary of the July Mass Uprising Day. He acknowledged that differences in opinion are inherent to democracy but stressed the importance of ensuring these differences do not lead to hostility. He called for vigilance among all democratic entities to maintain unity.
Prime Minister Rahman described August 5 as a day of victory, marking the restoration of democratic rights. He recalled the events of August 5, 2024, when students and citizens ended over a decade of fascist rule. He recounted the struggles faced by the BNP, anti-fascist political parties, and citizens, who endured persecution and repression in their fight for democratic rights.
He noted that many suffered enforced disappearances, murders, and abductions during this period. He commended the unwavering leadership of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, who was imprisoned under false charges. He highlighted the establishment of secret detention centers called ‘Aynaghar,’ where countless individuals were detained indefinitely.
The Prime Minister criticized the ineffective constitutional institutions, including the judiciary and Election Commission, during the fascist rule. He condemned the erosion of constitutional integrity and the devastation of the country’s politics, economy, education, and healthcare systems. He recognized the contribution of people from all walks of life in the July-August Mass Uprising of 2024.
He recounted the violent repression faced by pro-democracy citizens during the uprising, including the firing upon civilians from helicopters. He paid tribute to martyrs like Abu Sayed, Wasim Akram, and Mugdho, whose bravery became sources of inspiration. He noted that the sacrifices made during the uprising were not in vain, leading to the flight of fascist leaders and collaborators.
The Prime Minister underscored the unprecedented nature of the events of August 5 in Bangladesh’s history and globally. He honored the sacrifices made from 1971 to the present in the struggle for independence and democracy. He called for efforts to build a just, democratic, and humane Bangladesh, ensuring political and economic empowerment, equality, and social justice.
He concluded with a commitment to prevent the resurgence of autocracy, fascism, extremism, or militancy in Bangladesh, emphasizing the enduring strength of national unity. He drew parallels between the struggle for independence in 1971 and the defense of freedom in 2024, affirming the nation’s promise to honor the martyrs of both struggles.
