Dhaka: Litton Das has been appointed as Bangladesh’s new ODI captain, succeeding Mehidy Hasan Miraz, as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to split the leadership of its Test and limited-overs teams. Litton, who is already at the helm of the T20I side, will now lead Bangladesh in both white-ball formats. Towhid Hridoy has taken on the role of ODI vice-captain, while Najmul Hossain Shanto continues as the Test captain.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the announcement was made by BCB President Tamim Iqbal following a board meeting in Mirpur. Tamim stated, “We have decided to have two captains across the three formats. We believe white-ball and red-ball cricket require different leadership, and the board supports that approach.”

Miraz, who assumed the ODI captaincy in June 2025 after Najmul was removed from the position, led Bangladesh to victory in 10 out of 24 ODIs under his tenure. His leadership saw the team secure series wins against formidable opponents such as West Indies, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Australia. However, his last assignment as captain concluded with a 2-1 series defeat in Zimbabwe.

Tamim Iqbal emphasized that the leadership change should not be seen as a critique of Miraz’s captaincy record. “Miraz has been an excellent captain and has led the team well,” he said. “But we feel Bangladesh need more from him as a cricketer. We have not seen the level of batting and bowling he is capable of, and we want him to focus fully on getting back to that standard.”

The BCB chief also mentioned that he had discussed the decision with Miraz in advance, and the all-rounder understood the board’s reasoning behind the change.
