Kathmandu: A ‘luggage tag’ system will be implemented on long-distance public transport vehicles departing from the Kathmandu Valley from May 29. This system is being introduced to ensure the safety of passengers’ belongings, eliminate the loss or exchange of bags, and further manage public transport.
According to National News Agency Nepal, a formal agreement to this effect was signed between the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office and the Federation of Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs on Friday. The agreement was signed by Navaraj Adhikari, Chief of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office and Senior Superintendent of Police, and Saroj Sitaula, President of the Federation.
The new system will require tagging of passengers’ luggage starting from May 29. Only by matching the luggage tag number provided to passengers with the number on the bus will the luggage be delivered to the destination. This measure is intended to play a crucial role in keeping passengers’ belongings safe.
SSP Navaraj Adhikari informed RSS that such a system is necessary to control the increasing luggage theft, bag losses, and illegal activities in the public transport sector. Furthermore, Federation President Saroj Sitaula mentioned that efforts are being made to introduce a modern management system in public bus services, similar to air travel. He emphasized that keeping passengers’ luggage safe has been a long-standing challenge and that the new system will help eliminate the problem of bags being swapped, lost, or taken by the wrong person, creating an environment where passengers can travel with peace of mind.
