NBR Incentivizes Early Income Tax Return Filing with Up to 5% Rebate

Dhaka: The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has introduced a tax incentive program offering up to a five percent rebate for individual taxpayers and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) who file their income tax returns between July 1 and September 30. This initiative is aimed at boosting voluntary tax compliance and ensuring timely tax return submissions.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the NBR’s recent press release detailed that eligible taxpayers submitting their returns within the specified three-month window will be entitled to a rebate of five percent of the tax payable under Section 173 of the Income Tax Act, 2023. However, the maximum benefit under this scheme is capped at Tk 25,000.

The NBR has clarified that no tax incentives will be available for returns filed from October 1 to December 31. The revenue authority also outlined the additional tax liabilities for late filers. Taxpayers submitting their returns between January 1 and March 31 will incur an additional charge of either two percent of the tax payable or Tk 3,000, whichever is higher, as per Section 173(2) of the Income Tax Act, 2023. For returns filed between April 1 and June 30, the additional tax will increase to five percent of the tax payable or Tk 5,000, whichever is higher.

The NBR emphasized that this new provision aims to foster a culture of voluntary tax compliance while enhancing the efficiency and orderliness of tax administration. The revenue authority launched the e-return service for individual taxpayers for the 2026-27 tax year on July 22, allowing taxpayers to file returns and pay taxes online via the NBR’s e-tax platform. Payment options include bank transfers, debit and credit cards, and digital payment services like bKash, Nagad, and Rocket.

Taxpayers can receive an acknowledgement receipt and tax certificate immediately upon the successful submission of accurate information through the online system. To support those encountering difficulties with online filing, NBR officials will provide assistance through the call centre (09643717171) and other electronic channels during office hours on working days.

The NBR has urged taxpayers to file their returns by September 30 to benefit from the tax rebate, reaffirming that no incentives will be provided for returns submitted after the deadline.
