Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Attends Sri Lanka’s 77th Independence Day in Jordan


Amman: The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Amman organized a diplomatic reception to celebrate the 77th Independence Day of Sri Lanka at the Movenpick Hotel in Amman on 04 February 2025, following the official flag-hoisting ceremony held at the Embassy premises. Around 250 guests, including senators, members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, mayors, prominent academic and business personalities, media personnel, and Sri Lankan well-wishers, attended the event.



According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Sri Lanka, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Nancy Namrouqa, attended the Independence Day diplomatic reception as the guest of honour, extending her warmest felicitations to the Government and people of Sri Lanka on the 77th anniversary of independence.



Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Jordan, J.A.D.S. Priyangika Wijegunasekara, addressed the gathering, highlighting Sri Lanka’s history, challenges, and achievements in its post-Independence journey. She emphasized the progress made in the health and education sectors and the stabilization of Sri Lanka’s economy. The Ambassador also discussed the significant milestones in the diplomatic relations and current trade, tourism, and investment cooperation between Sri Lanka and Jordan.



The longstanding friendship between Sri Lanka and Jordan, established in 1965, was underscored by the Ambassador. She noted that the year holds special significance as the two nations mark 60 years of diplomatic ties, with plans for several events throughout the year to celebrate and expand partnerships.



The Ambassador expressed gratitude to the Jordanian government for providing employment opportunities and support to Sri Lankan employees. She invited foreign friends to visit Sri Lanka to experience its hospitality, culture, and natural beauty.



A cake-cutting ceremony, jointly conducted by the Ambassador and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, followed the speech. Traditional Sri Lankan dance performances by Sri Lankan employees from Mass and Classic apparel factories in Jordan captivated attendees, showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage.



The event featured promotional videos of Sri Lanka’s tourist attractions, and guests enjoyed a buffet with Sri Lankan snacks and tea. Attendees received delightful packets of Ceylon tea, renowned worldwide. The reception was generously funded by well-wishers in Jordan.
