Badulla: President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has officially inaugurated the ‘Navodaya Gama’ housing project, providing new homes for 50 families displaced by the 2023 landslide in Poonagala and Kabaragala. Emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring a better life for all citizens, the President handed over keys and title deeds to the beneficiaries at a ceremony held recently.
According to News.LK, the housing project aligns with the government’s ‘A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life’ policy, aiming to offer secure housing and a dignified life to affected families. Each of the 50 houses, built on plots of 10 perches, is fully equipped and measures 550 square feet, featuring two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. The project, with an investment of approximately Rs. 3.2 million per house, also furnished each family with essential items worth around Rs. 175,000.
During the event, President Dissanayake reiterated the government’s focus on the rights and welfare of the Malayagam community, describing them as integral members of the nation. He highlighted plans for future housing projects and wage increases for the community, emphasizing the need for improved education and healthcare to uplift their standard of living.
The President also underscored the importance of protecting the central hills, proposing the establishment of a Central Highlands Protection Authority to preserve this vital region. The initiative aims to address environmental challenges and secure the central hills for future generations.
Additionally, under the Indian Housing Programme, the President distributed freehold title deeds to 163 beneficiaries in the Badulla District. He also acknowledged the contribution of the Sri Lanka Army Corps of Engineers in the construction process, presenting a symbolic gift to Army Commander Lieutenant General Nilantha Premaratne.
Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure, Samantha Vidyaratne, expressed satisfaction with the rapid completion of the housing project and emphasized ongoing efforts to complete previously stalled housing initiatives. Deputy Minister Sundaralingam Pradeep highlighted the historical significance of the day, noting the government’s commitment to providing homes and improving the lives of the hill-country population.
The ceremony saw the presence of various dignitaries, including foreign representatives and local residents, marking a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to support disaster-affected families and promote community integration.
