Nuwara eliya: President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has declared that the year 2026 will be pivotal in realizing the principle that everyone is equal before the law. During a speech at the Central Province programme of the ‘A Nation United’ national campaign to eradicate the drug menace, held in Nuwara Eliya, President Dissanayake emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to establish the supremacy of the rule of law and to combat the drug crisis plaguing the nation.
According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, the President highlighted the detrimental impact of a collapsed rule of law on a country’s development, stressing that in such cases, power often falls into the hands of criminals. He assured that his administration is dedicated to creating a nation where the suffering of the current generation is not passed down to future ones, and where no child falls victim to the drug crisis.
President Dissanayake urged all sectors of society, including religious leaders, political figures, security forces, and the general public, to unite in addressing the drug menace, which he described as a national disaster. The ‘A Nation United’ campaign aims to dismantle drug trafficking networks, strengthen rehabilitation facilities, and raise public awareness about the dangers of drug use.
Since the campaign’s inception, over 91,000 suspects linked to drug trafficking have been apprehended, with investigations launched into more than one hundred illegal assets. The programme has also seen 1,818 suspects detained for long-term investigations and approximately 1,566 individuals referred for rehabilitation.
The President commended the Sri Lanka Police for their efforts, recognizing 62 officers from the Nuwara Eliya District for their contributions. He further elaborated on the necessity of a strong economy, sound foreign policy, and an efficient public service to rebuild the nation.
President Dissanayake emphasized the need for a non-aligned foreign policy to maintain stability in a world marked by contradictions and conflicts. He also highlighted the importance of a resilient economy, capable of withstanding various challenges, including natural disasters and geopolitical tensions.
A key aspect of the President’s vision is the establishment of a robust public service, supported by digitalization and essential facilities. He announced significant salary increases for public servants to enhance the attractiveness and efficiency of the public sector.
Furthermore, President Dissanayake reiterated the critical importance of upholding the rule of law, ensuring that justice is accessible to all citizens, regardless of wealth or power. He called for a collective effort to combat the illicit drug trade, which fuels crime and undermines the state machinery.
The President concluded by urging all stakeholders, including religious and educational leaders, to foster a strong public conscience against the drug menace. He assured that the government has withdrawn political protection for drug traffickers, granting law enforcement agencies the freedom to carry out their duties effectively.
