Dhaka: A suspected member of a robbery gang was shot and injured in a gunfight with Detective Branch (DB) police in Aftabnagar under Badda Police Station on Thursday night. The injured man was identified as Md SM Ariful Islam Pavel, 30, who hails from Bakerganj village in Gafargaon upazila of Mymensingh and had been residing in the Goran area of Khilgaon in Dhaka.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the incident took place around 8:45pm in the East and Housing area of Sector 5, M-Block, Aftabnagar. Gulshan DB Inspector Anwar, who participated in the operation, reported that police initiated a drive at approximately 8:30pm after receiving intelligence about an armed gang planning a robbery in the vicinity.

Pavel allegedly pulled out a pistol upon realizing the presence of DB police and attempted to shoot at the officers. In response, police fired a single round from a shotgun in self-defence, striking him below the right knee. Following the altercation, police apprehended Pavel and confiscated a pistol a
long with three rounds of ammunition from his possession.

Pavel was subsequently transported to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 10pm, where he is currently undergoing treatment. Legal proceedings, including filing a case with Badda Police Station, are in progress.
