SL Navy and Maldivian Coast Guard Intercept Drug-Laden Fishing Trawler.

Colombo: A joint operation between the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) and the Maldivian Coast Guard led to the seizure of a Sri Lankan fishing trawler carrying a significant load of narcotics, including 344 kg of crystal methamphetamine and 124 kg of cocaine, within the Maldivian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) on November 23.

According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, the operation was initiated following an alert from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Colombo about the trawler’s suspicious presence in the Maldivian EEZ. Coordination with Maldivian authorities and intelligence analysis revealed the trawler’s involvement in drug trafficking activities. The Maldivian Coast Guard, acting on this intelligence, executed a search operation that led to the discovery and confiscation of the illicit drugs and the apprehension of the trawler.

Ongoing joint investigations by the SLN and Maldivian Intelligence aim to uncover the ultimate destination of the seized narcotics. This operation underscores the effect
iveness of regional cooperation in addressing drug trafficking challenges, particularly those masquerading as legitimate fishing operations.
