South Africa Tightens Grip in World Cup Qualifiers, Burkina Faso and Uganda Shine

Colombo: South Africa solidified their position in Group C of the African 2026 World Cup qualifiers, while Burkina Faso and Uganda made significant strides in their respective groups. Tanzania managed a crucial draw in Group E, and Benin climbed into a qualifying spot.

According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, Burkina Faso delivered a dominant performance against Djibouti at a neutral venue, securing a 6-0 victory. Constant Irie kicked off the scoring in the 16th minute, followed by a goal from Jean Tiendrebeogo and a brace from Edmond Tapsoba. Dango Ouattara redeemed himself with a goal in the second half, and later sealed the victory with a penalty, putting Burkina Faso in a strong position in Group A.

Meanwhile, South Africa executed a professional game plan against Lesotho in Maseru, winning 3-0. Maloisane Nkota opened the scoring, with Lyle Foster adding a second goal and assisting Oswin Appollis for a third. This victory places South Africa comfortably at the top of Group C, distancing themselves from Nigeria and Rwanda.

In Group C, Benin edged past Zimbabwe with a late goal from Steve Mouni©, lifting them to second place. Despite Zimbabwe’s strategic game management, they remain at the bottom of the group, while Benin’s win tightens the race for the final qualifying spot.

Tanzania maintained their hold on second place in Group E with a late equalizer against Congo. Dylan Moussavou had initially put Congo ahead, but Salum Mwalimu’s goal ensured Tanzania stayed in contention for the play-offs behind Morocco.

Uganda rejuvenated their campaign in Group G with a convincing 4-0 win over Mozambique. Allan Okello initiated the scoring spree, followed by goals from Rogers Mato, Travis Mutyaba, and Elia Capradossi. This victory brings Uganda back into the competition, though they still trail leaders Algeria and second-placed Mozambique.

As the qualifiers progress, the race for the runners-up spots in various groups remains highly competitive. With three matchdays left, goal differences are becoming crucial in determining which teams will advance.
