Sri Lankan Prime Minister Showcases Ancestral Wisdom for Global Sustainable Food Systems

Thimphu: The Prime Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, delivered a keynote address at the inaugural Global Conscious Food Systems Summit 2026, which took place on September 1, 2026, at Dungkar Dzong in Bhutan. The Summit was convened under the theme ‘Rising to the Moment: Igniting Consciousness to Address the Polycrisis.’

According to News.LK, the Global Conscious Food Systems Summit 2026 marks the first global gathering dedicated to exploring how consciousness, values, culture, spirituality, and inner transformation can propel the development of sustainable, equitable, and regenerative food systems. The event was jointly hosted by the Royal Government of Bhutan, the Conscious Food Systems Alliance (CoFSA), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with the overarching theme ‘Activating the Heart of Food Systems Transformation.’

During the Summit, the Prime Minister shared her pride in Sri Lanka’s national heritage, characterized by generations who valued harmony with nature in every aspect of food production, storage, preservation, and consumption. She emphasized that Sri Lanka’s ancient food systems were deeply rooted in sustainability and balance, employing traditional agricultural practices that worked harmoniously with nature.

Following her keynote address, Dr. Amarasuriya joined a panel discussion with H.E. Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of Bhutan, focusing on ‘Conscious Leadership – The Art of Facilitating Transformation for a More Just and Regenerative World.’ The discussion highlighted the importance of conscious leadership in promoting sustainable and just food systems.

In a subsequent press conference, the Prime Minister addressed questions from both local and international media on various topics, including food security, best agricultural practices, women’s employment, and sustainable social and economic development.

The Summit provided Dr. Harini Amarasuriya with a significant platform to share Sri Lanka’s insights and experiences concerning sustainable food systems, inclusive development, and the role of conscious leadership in tackling the interconnected challenges that the world currently faces.
