Colombo: The recent successful completion of Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) and Casualty Evacuation (CASEVAC) missions by the Sri Lanka Air Force Aviation Unit, deployed with the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), has once again highlighted the professionalism and operational readiness of Sri Lankan peacekeepers.
According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan aircrew have been operating in challenging environments characterized by volatile security conditions, difficult terrain, and limited infrastructure. They have consistently executed critical missions such as evacuation, troop transport, logistical resupply, and other aviation support tasks in alignment with the United Nations mandate, earning appreciation from UN mission authorities and enhancing Sri Lanka’s reputation as a reliable troop-contributing nation.
Sri Lanka has a long-standing tradition of contributing personnel to international peace support and humanitarian missions under various multinational frameworks. Over the years, Sri Lankan military personnel have served in challenging operational environments across Africa, the Middle East, and other regions, undertaking duties such as civilian protection, engineering support, logistics, medical assistance, and disaster response.
Recent operations have once again demonstrated the professionalism and dedication of Sri Lankan contingents deployed overseas. Their unwavering commitment to mission objectives and ability to perform under demanding conditions have earned them widespread recognition from international partners.
Sri Lankan peace support personnel have been involved in engineering projects, air transport missions, humanitarian assistance, medical support, construction of essential infrastructure, and community engagement programs that benefit local populations. Their extensive experience, gained through decades of military operations and disaster response, has enabled them to adapt effectively to complex multinational environments.
The proposed deployment of Sri Lankan personnel to the Gang Suppression Force Mission in Haiti follows requests from international partners, recognizing the professionalism and operational capability of Sri Lankan contingents during overseas peace support operations. The selection and deployment process adheres to established institutional procedures and international screening requirements.
The government maintains close cooperation with international partners regarding proposed deployments and engages with relevant authorities on necessary arrangements, ensuring decisions are made in accordance with domestic laws, international obligations, and human rights standards.
Sri Lanka’s participation in international peace support operations reflects its commitment to supporting multinational efforts, upholding responsibilities and standards expected of troop-contributing countries. The conclusion of Sri Lanka’s three-decade terrorist conflict in May 2009 serves as a testament to its capabilities.
