US Ambassador Christensen Affirms Neutral Stance in Bangladesh Elections

Dhaka: Expressing optimism over the future of the two countries, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen has reaffirmed that the United States will maintain a neutral stance in the upcoming Bangladesh elections, emphasizing that the decision of leadership is a sovereign choice for the people of Bangladesh.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Ambassador Christensen made these remarks during his first meeting with a small group of journalists at the EMK Centre in Dhaka. The Ambassador was accompanied by Poornima Rai, the spokesperson of the US Embassy Dhaka. He stated that the US has a long-standing tradition of engaging with all parties and reiterated the commitment to work with whoever wins in the elections, highlighting the importance of bilateral cooperation on economic, trade, and security issues.

Ambassador Christensen expressed his belief that the two nations can leverage many opportunities for collaboration. Discussing the economic ties, he noted that US business involvement in Bangladesh is not limited to trade and investment but also includes the introduction of international best practices. On the humanitarian front, he praised Bangladesh’s efforts in hosting over a million Rohingya refugees and mentioned the US’s ongoing support, citing a $2 billion funding framework signed with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs to aid vulnerable communities.

The Ambassador shared his eagerness to return to Bangladesh, a nation he has been closely associated with for over two decades. His primary responsibility, as he outlined, is to advance the interests of the American people and the agenda of President Donald Trump, while advocating for a policy that puts people first, both in the US and Bangladesh.

He also highlighted recent interactions with key political figures, including BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman and Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, aiming to foster stronger judicial cooperation and security ties. Ambassador Christensen presented his credentials to President Mohammed Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban, expressing his commitment to strengthening the US-Bangladesh relationship.

Reflecting on the historical partnership of over 50 years between the two countries, the Ambassador reaffirmed his dedication to promoting regional stability and economic growth. Christensen, who is fluent in multiple languages, brings a wealth of experience from previous roles, including his recent position overseeing global security efforts for the Department of State.

His return to Bangladesh is marked by an enthusiastic reception from the US Embassy Dhaka, as he aims to lead efforts to enhance diplomatic relations and advance mutual interests in various sectors. Ambassador Christensen’s extensive background and vision for the future promise a continued strengthening of the bond between the United States and Bangladesh.
