US Envoy Reiterates Support for Bangladesh’s Democratic Transition


Dhaka: US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen on Thursday reaffirmed strong US support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition, commending the interim government’s efforts towards the upcoming elections and reforms. The Ambassador’s visit to National Security Advisor Dr Khalilur Rahman’s office highlighted mutual interests and cooperative efforts between the two nations.



According to United News of Bangladesh, Ambassador Christensen and Dr Rahman discussed various facets of Bangladesh-US relations during their hour-long meeting. Their discussions included the reciprocal tariff agreement, support for Rohingya refugees, immigration matters such as the visa bond, and the repatriation of undocumented Bangladeshis from the United States.



In addition to these topics, the meeting also covered American business and investment opportunities in Bangladesh and regional issues of mutual concern. Dr Rahman welcomed Ambassador Christensen as the new envoy, acknowledging his previous contributions to enhancing bilateral relations during his earlier tenure in Dhaka and his roles within the US government in Washington DC.



Dr Rahman expressed optimism that the relationship between the two countries would strengthen further during Ambassador Christensen’s current tenure. The Chief Adviser’s press wing provided insights into the discussions and expressed hopes for elevated cooperation. Political and Economic Counsellor of the US embassy in Dhaka, Eric Geelan, was also present at the meeting.
