Sign Language Declared Easier to Learn Than Multiple Languages by Minister Upali Pannilage

Colombo: Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment, Professor Upali Pannilage, has declared that sign language can be considered a universal language and is easier to learn compared to mastering several spoken languages.

According to News.LK, the Minister made these remarks during a certificate awarding ceremony held at the Ministry premises for public sector employees from the Colombo District who successfully completed a sign language course. This programme was organized by the National Secretariat for Persons with Disabilities.

The Minister emphasized the significance of this initiative, highlighting its role in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of public services offered to individuals with hearing impairments. Plans are underway to extend the training programme to all districts across the island by 2026, he noted.

Professor Pannilage also stressed that such programmes are instrumental in building an inclusive society. By equipping individuals with sign language skills, the initiative aims to ensure persons with disabilities are treated equally and have the opportunity to achieve social and economic well-being.
