Colombo: Minister Bimal Rathnayake says the Government is taking steps to reduce road accidents through the National Transport Action Plan, aiming to cut the annual death toll of over 2,700. He made these remarks at a workshop organised by the National Transport Medical Institute at the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration, focused on random drug testing awareness.
According to News.LK, the Minister noted that driver-related issues account for 53% of accidents, while 15-18% involve drug use, highlighting the urgent need for discipline and proper training. The Government is prioritising passenger safety by introducing standardised buses and vehicles. The aim is to significantly reduce road fatalities by 2029 through sustained safety reforms.
