Colombo: The Navy rolled out a community support programme from 10 to 24 July 2026 to assist devotees taking part in the annual foot pilgrimage to the historic Kataragama Devalaya.

According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, the initiative was organised under the supervision of the Southern and Southeastern Naval Commands and aimed to ensure the safety and welfare of pilgrims travelling from the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

As part of the initiative, naval personnel were deployed along the pilgrimage route from the entrance to Kumana National Park to the Kumbukkan Oya crossing. They provided security, guidance, and welfare assistance to the pilgrims. The personnel ensured the well-being of devotees by supplying drinking water and other essentials. They were also ready with first aid, emergency assistance, and lifesaving services.

The Navy’s assistance enabled thousands of devotees to undertake their religious pilgrimage safely and with greater convenience. This effort reflects the Navy’s continued com
mitment to community service and humanitarian assistance.

Meanwhile, the Navy remains committed to conducting similar community outreach initiatives that promote public welfare while supporting the country’s religious and social traditions.
