Dhaka: Women and Children Affairs, and Social Welfare Minister Prof Dr AZM Zahid Hossain emphasized that freedom of speech should not be misconstrued as a license for making unrestricted remarks. He cautioned that provocative statements could lead to instability and potentially aid in the resurgence of fascism. The minister shared these thoughts while speaking at a discussion commemorating the death anniversary of former Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal President Shafiul Bari Babu at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) in Dhaka.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Zahid highlighted the efforts of certain groups to create unnecessary tension, which he believes is an attempt to facilitate the rehabilitation of fascism. He asserted that the public would not remain passive if offensive language is employed, and the BNP would take to the streets in response. Zahid emphasized the importance of learning from the party’s long political journey, urging leaders and activists to avoid actions that could bring the party’s integrity into question.
The minister reiterated that while freedom of speech is a constitutional right, individuals must exercise caution in their language and expressions. He stated that democracy does not endorse actions that malign others, involve insulting language, or damage reputations. Zahid, a BNP Standing Committee member, expressed concern over the use of abusive language in political discourse, warning that it only incites public outrage.
Zahid underscored the expectation that ordinary people will not remain silent if political speeches are rife with abuse. He insisted that attempts to provoke unrest and usher in authoritarianism would not succeed so long as BNP and its supporters remain active. The minister reaffirmed BNP’s commitment to politics devoid of hypocrisy and compromise, focused on serving the nation, safeguarding its sovereignty, and promoting public welfare, development, and good governance.
He further noted that despite being targeted by conspiracies, the BNP has consistently rebounded with public support. Zahid issued a warning to those attempting to restore the “fallen fascist,” emphasizing BNP’s history of resisting authoritarianism without yielding or retreating.
