Dhaka: Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman on Thursday emphasized that the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the United States are progressing positively, highlighting their commitment to build on previous achievements. The announcement came after his meeting with US Special Envoy to South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor, at the State Guest House Padma.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the meeting included Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir and US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen. Gor expressed his appreciation for the meeting, stating that it was an opportunity to discuss strengthening the US-Bangladesh relationship. “Lots of positive developments,” Gor noted.
Dr Khalilur Rahman described the discussions as “very good,” covering a broad range of bilateral issues and reinforcing both nations’ commitment to further strengthening ties. Key areas of cooperation discussed included trade, investment, energy, and migration, along with future engagement strategies.
The Foreign Minister reiterated that the relations between Bangladesh and the US continue to move in a positive direction, with plans to build upon past accomplishments. He noted ongoing cooperation in energy and expressed hope that the US would continue its support in resolving the Rohingya crisis, as Bangladesh pursues a multilateral approach.
Dr Khalilur also clarified that there were no discussions on the Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA) or the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) during the meeting. Furthermore, there were no talks regarding the Awami League or any proposed economic corridor.
Sergio Gor, who is on his first official visit to Bangladesh, is expected to meet with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and visit the Rohingya camps. His visit aims to strengthen strategic ties, regional security, and economic cooperation between Bangladesh and the US, according to US Ambassador Christensen.
Dr Khalilur described the visit as “exploratory,” with Gor intending to gain a broader understanding of Bangladesh by engaging with multiple stakeholders. The US remains the largest international contributor to the Rohingya humanitarian response.
Addressing concerns about potential pressure from Washington regarding the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART), Dr Khalilur stated that Bangladesh does not feel any pressure and remains focused on strengthening relations with all countries while protecting its national interests.
Ambassador Gor, who also serves as the US Ambassador to India, was appointed by President Donald J. Trump as the Special Envoy to South and Central Asia. He has a notable background, including founding Winning Team Publishing with Donald Trump Jr. and serving as Assistant to the President and Director of Presidential Personnel at the White House.
