Sylhet: National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Organiser Nasir Uddin Patwari announced at a rally in Companiganj upazila of Sylhet that the death sentence against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would be executed should she return to Bangladesh. Patwari claimed that Hasina, who has been residing in New Delhi after being ousted from power, would face this fate if she intends to re-engage in political activities in her home country.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Patwari commented on legal actions against Hasina at the rally held under the party’s ‘July Awakening to Build the Nation’ programme. He also held the former government culpable for the fatalities of Abu Sayeed and others during the July 2024 movement, alleging that around 400 individuals were killed and affirming the NCP’s commitment to pursuing justice for these deaths.
In response to journalists’ inquiries prior to the rally, Patwari warned that the BNP could face political repercussions if it disregarded public sentiment on state reforms. He emphasized that a majority of voters supported reforms and cautioned that resisting them could diminish the party’s public backing.
Patwari criticized the government for shortages in essential resources like electricity, gas, and fuel, accusing them of distributing benefits, such as agricultural cards, to BNP activists rather than the general populace. He also expressed concerns about the country’s economic stagnation, pointing to the slow reopening of Malaysia’s labor market and unsatisfactory outcomes from a recent China visit.
He outlined the NCP’s three primary demands before the election: ensuring a credible election, implementing state reforms, and holding accountable those responsible for alleged crimes during the Awami League’s governance.
The rally, presided over by Companiganj Upazila NCP Convener Ubaid Ahmed, saw addresses by the party’s Northern Region Chief Coordinator Sarjis Alam, reserved seat lawmaker Dr Mahmuda Mitu, and local NCP leaders. Several speakers also accused some BNP activists of engaging in land grabbing, tender manipulation, and extortion, urging the party leadership to address these issues.
