JCD Leader Killed During Police Operation in Savar: 4 Policemen Withdrawn

Savar: Four policemen from Pirgachha Police Station have been withdrawn and reassigned to the police lines following the death of a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader during a police operation aimed at rescuing a missing teenage girl in Savar.

According to United News of Bangladesh, two separate committees have been established in Dhaka and Rangpur to investigate the incident, as confirmed by Selim Malik, Officer-in-Charge of Pirgachha Police Station. The officers withdrawn from duty include Sub-Inspector Kanak Ranjan Barman, Assistant Sub-Inspector Md Osman Ali, Constable Prashanta Kumar, and Constable Sumi Akter. The withdrawal occurred on Saturday night.

The deceased, Monwarul Islam Bakshi, 30, served as the vice-president of Savar Thana Chhatra Dal and hailed from South Hatibandha village in Gaibandha district’s Sundarganj upazila. He had been residing in Savar with his family.

Police and family sources revealed that a 15-year-old girl from Monglakuti village in Pirgachha went missing on July 23, prompting her father, Mintu Mia, to file a general diary at Pirgachha Police Station. Utilizing technological assistance, the police traced the girl’s location to Savar.

On Thursday night, a nine-member team from Pirgachha Police Station, led by SI Kanak Ranjan Barman, conducted an operation at the staff quarters of the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre (BPATC) in Savar, with assistance from the Savar Police Station.

During the operation, police sources reported hearing a sound of something falling from the building’s roof, where they discovered Monwarul critically injured. He was transported to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The victim’s family alleged that Monwarul was pushed from the roof.

Monwarul’s brother, Momdel Hossain, claimed that Monwarul’s nephew, Shahriar Kabir Soumik, was in a relationship with the teenage girl, and the couple had married voluntarily, residing in Savar. He alleged that an argument ensued between Monwarul and the girl’s father, Mintu Mia, along with another individual present during the operation, leading to Monwarul being pushed off the roof.

Following the incident, Monwarul’s relatives brought his body to Pirgachha Police Station on Saturday morning, staging a protest. The situation was eventually calmed by local political leaders’ intervention. Officer-in-Charge Selim Malik confirmed that committees have been formed to investigate the incident thoroughly.
