New delhi: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s potential visit to India is emerging as a pivotal step in enhancing the Dhaka-Delhi relationship, with both nations intensifying discussions but yet to finalize the timing of the visit.

According to United News of Bangladesh, diplomatic sources suggest there is notable interest from both sides to facilitate the visit, although official confirmation is pending. India has expressed readiness to host the Bangladesh Prime Minister at any time. If realized, this would mark Tarique Rahman’s inaugural visit to India as Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, following his trips to Malaysia and China in June.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has extended invitations to Prime Minister Rahman for a bilateral visit and for the outreach session of the upcoming BRICS Summit. MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed these invitations, stating that updates would be provided as developments occur.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam mentioned that while visits to India and Japan remain unconfirmed, they depend on the Prime Minister’s schedule and ongoing discussions. The possibility of attending the BRICS Summit’s outreach session is still under consideration, with ample time left to decide.

Discussions between the two nations have touched on multifaceted relations, particularly energy cooperation. The MEA spokesperson noted the existing diesel supply arrangement with Bangladesh, with further requests to be evaluated against India’s capacity and requirements.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously expressed his desire to work closely with Bangladesh in various sectors, extending a warm invitation to Prime Minister Rahman and his family. Preparations for such a high-level visit typically involve agreement on dates and agendas, with media speculating possible dates in August and September.

The visit could potentially address several sensitive issues, including extradition requests, border management, trade, and energy cooperation. Recent diplomatic engagements, including meetings between Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi and Bangladesh’s leadership, highlight the ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations.

India’s invitation for Prime Minister Rahman to attend the BRICS Summit as the BIMSTEC Chair underscores the strategic importance of this visit. As discussions continue, both nations appear committed to advancing their relationship in a mutually beneficial manner.
