Colombo: Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has emphasized the necessity for a more cultured society in light of certain statements made on social media, particularly those targeting children, vulnerable individuals, or women.
According to News.LK, the Prime Minister highlighted that the definition of a cultured individual extends beyond academic knowledge or the ability to recite learned information. Instead, it involves an inner transformation facilitated by literature and artistic expression, fostering humanity and sensitivity within society. Dr. Amarasuriya made these remarks while attending the Gampaha Literary Festival (GAMLIT 26) at the Gampaha Municipal Council Auditorium as the Chief Guest.
She observed that a truly cultured person, having undergone such a transformative change, would not engage in actions that cause humiliation or disrespect to others. Before the festival’s commencement, the Prime Minister visited exhibition stalls by schoolchildren, showcasing talents in art, literature, and technology. She interacted with the students, appreciating their abilities and the dedication of their teachers.
The Prime Minister also presented gifts and certificates to students and schools that participated in the exhibition. During her address, she praised the organization of the literary festival by the Municipal Council as a national example. She noted the festival’s theme, ‘In Search of a Cultured Citizen,’ aligns with the government’s policy goals, emphasizing the importance of transforming individuals alongside economic and infrastructural development.
Dr. Amarasuriya stressed the government’s responsibility to create pathways for schoolchildren, the nation’s future, based on their talents and abilities. She urged students to incorporate literature and the arts into their lives, expressing hope that the initiative could evolve into a national program.
