Milan: The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Milan hosted a familiarization visit for members of the Bocconi University Students’ Association of Diplomacy and International Cooperation on 07 November 2024. The visit was designed to acquaint the students, who make up a diverse group with 45% being foreign and the rest Italian, with the functions of a diplomat and the operations of diplomatic institutions, focusing on Sri Lanka’s diplomatic, cultural, and economic ties with Italy.
According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Sri Lanka, the visit began with an introductory briefing by the Consul General of Sri Lanka. The briefing provided insights into the Consulate’s objectives, the roles of its staff, and the various activities undertaken to support Sri Lankan citizens in Northern Italy. Additionally, it highlighted efforts to foster bilateral relations and promote trade and cultural exchanges between Sri Lanka and Italy.
Following this, the students engaged in an interactive Q and A session, posing questions
about the evolution of Sri Lanka’s diplomatic landscape, its current foreign policy priorities, and the Consulate’s initiatives to strengthen Sri Lanka-Italy relations. This session offered the students a valuable opportunity to delve into real-world diplomatic issues and challenges.
The Consulate General had also arranged a presentation on Sri Lanka, showcasing its rich cultural heritage, economic landscape, and tourist attractions, thereby enhancing the students’ understanding of the country’s distinct identity. To further enrich their experience, the students were treated to authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, including traditional dishes such as hoppers and kottu roti, accompanied by Ceylon tea and a selection of Sri Lankan beverages and desserts. Each student received a giveaway as a gesture of hospitality and to leave a lasting impression of Sri Lanka.
The Consulate General anticipates that this interaction will deepen the students’ knowledge of Sri Lanka and inspire them to pursue future engagements in dip
lomacy and international relations. The Consulate looks forward to organizing similar initiatives to continue promoting Sri Lanka among globally-aware young audiences in Italy.
