Defence Secretary Directs Enhanced Security and Welfare for Dalada Exposition Devotees


Kandy: The Defence Secretary, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), is on an inspection visit to Kandy, focusing on the welfare infrastructure and security arrangements for the Dalada exposition attendees at the Sri Dalada Maligawa.

According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, the special exposition of the sacred tooth relic began on April 18, 2025, following a directive from President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The sacred relics are viewable daily from 11:00 am to 05:30 pm until April 27. The event is drawing thousands of local and international Buddhist devotees to Kandy each day.

A continuous security program, led by the tri-forces, is in place to provide basic amenities such as food, water, first aid, and sanitation facilities to the devotees while ensuring their safety. During his visit, the Defence Secretary reviewed the security measures and ongoing welfare initiatives, commending the efforts of the Tri-Forces, Police, and Civil Defence Department personnel.

The Defence Secretary also address
ed the challenges posed by the large crowds, encouraging public vigilance to manage queue conditions effectively. He acknowledged the generosity of philanthropists who are aiding devotees traveling from various regions for the exposition.

He stressed the collective duty to ensure security and welfare for participants of this significant spiritual event, which is taking place after a 16-year hiatus. The Defence Secretary was joined by senior military and police officers during his visit.
