Dhaka: The government has appointed journalist Umme Marufa as the first secretary (press) at the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, India, on a contractual basis. The Ministry of Public Administration issued a gazette notification confirming her one-year contractual appointment, effective from the date of her joining.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Umme Marufa is currently serving as a special correspondent for the television network News24. Her appointment follows the resignation of Md Tariqul Islam Bhuiyan, also known as Tarique Choyon, who stepped down from his position as the first secretary (press) for personal and professional reasons.

Tarique Choyon announced his resignation in a post on his verified Facebook account, expressing that he spent a fulfilling year and a half in Kolkata and tried to carry out his responsibilities diligently. He also shared his future plans of writing a book about his professional experiences and interactions in Kolkata, seeking prayers for his endeavors.

The government’s decision to appoint Umme Marufa marks a significant transition within the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, as she takes on the responsibility to manage press-related activities and enhance communication efforts.
