High Commission of Sri Lanka in New Delhi Celebrates 77th Independence Anniversary


New Delhi: Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in India, Priyanga Wickramasinghe, hosted a reception to mark the 77th anniversary of Sri Lanka’s independence at the High Commission premises in New Delhi on February 20, 2025. Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles of the Government of India, Pabitra Margherita, attended the event as the chief guest.



According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Sri Lanka, Acting High Commissioner Wickramasinghe highlighted in her address the significance of this year’s anniversary, noting the establishment of a new government in Sri Lanka with a strong national mandate. She emphasized the unity of the Sri Lankan people across various divides in their collective effort to reinvent the nation.



The Acting High Commissioner underscored the deep-rooted relations between Sri Lanka and India, bound by common heritage. She recalled the state visit of President Anura Kumara Disanayaka to India in December 2024, where both nations’ leaders recognized the vast potential of their relationship and committed to a comprehensive partnership.



Wickramasinghe also shared an observation from President Disanayaka’s Independence Day address in Sri Lanka, highlighting the responsibility to create a world of elevated humanity and equitable opportunities. She noted the President’s reflections on the country’s collective vision and commitment as global citizens.



State Minister Margherita, in his remarks, stressed the importance of deepening bilateral ties to achieve a joint vision for future partnerships. He reiterated India’s role as a dependable partner committed to Sri Lanka’s growth, noting India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and ‘SAGAR’ vision as guiding principles in enhancing this special partnership.



The event featured cultural performances by the Channa-Upuli Performing Arts Foundation and an array of Sri Lankan cuisine prepared by chefs from the Cinnamon Grand, Colombo. The celebration was attended by representatives from the Government of India, the diplomatic corps in Delhi, the business community, the travel industry, Sri Lankans living in India, and other well-wishers.
