Colombo: India dominated the opening match of the Servo Cup Women’s Tri-Nation ODI Series, defeating Sri Lanka by 9 wickets with 56 balls to spare. The encounter, held at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, was reduced to 39 overs due to rain, but India showcased a commanding performance to secure the win.
According to Sri Lanka Cricket, the match took a pivotal turn following the unfortunate run out of Sri Lanka’s No. 3 batter, Harshitha Samarawickrama. Her dismissal for 14 runs was a critical blow to the hosts, especially after she had stabilized the innings from 23 for 1 to 67 alongside Hashini Perera, who contributed a brisk 30 off 46 balls. The run out was deemed a result of poor judgement and significantly impacted Sri Lanka’s ability to post a competitive total, as they were eventually bowled out for 147 in 38.1 overs.
The Sri Lankan batting collapse was further exacerbated by India’s effective spin attack, with Sneh Rana leading the charge by taking three wickets, while Deepti Sharma and
Shree Charani claimed two wickets each. India’s chase was spearheaded by openers Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal. Mandhana’s quick-fire 43 off 46 balls set the tone for the innings, supported by Rawal’s unbeaten 50, which earned her the Player of the Match accolade.
Mandhana and Rawal established a solid foundation with a 54-run partnership, neutralizing the Sri Lankan bowling attack effectively. Harleen Deol joined Rawal to finish the match with an unbeaten 48, guiding India to a comfortable victory by reaching 149 for 1 in just 29.4 overs.
The match highlighted India’s strategic prowess and depth in batting and bowling, setting a strong precedent for the remainder of the series. With this win, India takes an early lead in the tournament and will look to maintain their form in the upcoming fixtures.
