Dhaka: Police have arrested a local leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) on charges of raping a college girl in Jashore’s Chougachha upazila. The arrestee, Arafat Hossain Rabbi, 22, serves as the senior joint general secretary of the Chougachha Government College unit of JCD and resides in Balidapara village under Fulsara union in the upazila. He was detained on Saturday night following a case filed by the victim over the incident that occurred earlier in the day.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the victim, a Class-XII student, had sought Rabbi’s assistance in obtaining her National Identity Card. Despite the Upazila Election Office being closed due to a public holiday on Saturday, Rabbi allegedly took her to Chougachha municipality in the morning. The complaint claimed that he later convinced her to accompany him to a house in the Niribilipara area of the municipality, where he allegedly raped her.

After returning home, the victim informed her parents of the incident, leading to the filing of a case at Chougachha Police Station. Officer-in-Charge Mamunur Rashid stated that the accused was presented before a court on Sunday. He also confirmed that an investigation into the incident is underway.
