Sydney: Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has retired from one-day internationals to concentrate on the upcoming T20 World Cup. The 36-year-old, who debuted in 2012, has been a key player in Australia’s cricketing success, participating in 149 ODIs and securing two World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023, along with a T20 World Cup win in 2021.
According to BBC, Maxwell expressed his decision on The Final Word podcast, sharing that he had a conversation with Australia’s chair of men’s selectors, George Bailey, about the 2027 World Cup. Maxwell stated, “I don’t think I am going to make that, it’s time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own.” He emphasized the importance of giving upcoming players a chance to establish themselves as the team prepares for future tournaments.
Nicknamed “The Big Show,” Maxwell concludes his ODI career with 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81, including four centuries and 23 half-centuries. Notably, he holds the second-best ODI strike rate of all time at 126.70 and has taken 77 wickets as an off-spinner. His remarkable innings against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup, where he scored 201 runs, is considered one of the greatest in ODI history.
Cricket Australia’s chief executive, Todd Greenberg, praised Maxwell’s contributions, stating, “Congratulations to Glenn on what has been one of the most exciting and influential one-day international careers in the format’s history.” Greenberg highlighted Maxwell’s explosive batting style and his pivotal role in Australia’s success, inspiring fans and young cricketers alike.
Maxwell last played in April with the Punjab Kings but was sidelined by a hand injury for the remainder of the IPL season. Looking forward, he has participated in 116 T20 internationals and aims to be part of the 2026 T20 World Cup, scheduled in India and Sri Lanka from 8 February to 8 March.
George Bailey commended Maxwell’s talent, stating, “His level of natural talent and skill is remarkable. His energy in the field, under-rated ability with the ball, and longevity have been superb.” Bailey is optimistic about Maxwell’s future contributions, saying, “He will be pivotal in the next 12 months as we build toward the World Cup early next year.”
