New york: Spider-Man: Brand New Day has achieved a remarkable feat in the global box office, raking in $927 million (£687 million) in ticket sales over its opening weekend. This milestone makes it the second-biggest opening weekend ever, surpassing its estimated $225 million production budget.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the superhero film, featuring the real-life couple Tom Holland and Zendaya, follows closely behind Avengers: Endgame, which grossed more than $1.2 billion during its launch in 2019. Brand New Day also set an impressive record in North America, earning $335 million in box office revenue.
The film’s exceptional performance provides a significant boost for Marvel Studios, especially with the eagerly awaited release of Avengers: Doomsday scheduled for December. This comes after several Marvel movies failed to meet expectations in recent years.
Brand New Day, which hit theaters last week, continues the storyline a few years after 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. In this installment, Peter Parker continues his crime-fighting endeavors in a world oblivious to his superhero identity. The film has received largely positive reviews, with many praising it as Tom Holland’s finest performance as Spider-Man.
Distributor Sony Pictures reported that Brand New Day earned $572 million from over 73,000 screens outside the US, including $121 million from China. Notably, it garnered $49 million in UK ticket sales over the weekend. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige described the opening as “truly phenomenal” and expressed gratitude to audiences for experiencing the film in theaters.
This film marks Marvel’s final big-screen release before Avengers: Doomsday, which promises to conclude multiple superhero story arcs initiated after Avengers: Endgame. In contrast, Marvel films released post-Endgame have struggled to capture the same widespread audience interest. Titles such as The Marvels and Thunderbolts, although managing to recoup their production costs, rank among the studio’s lower-grossing films.
Despite challenges, Spider-Man remains one of Marvel’s most lucrative franchises, with No Way Home earning nearly $2 billion in ticket sales. Although cinema attendance has declined since the Covid-19 pandemic, which accelerated the trend of home streaming, the big screen has shown signs of revival. The North American box office is on course to surpass $10 billion for the first time since 2019, spurred by blockbusters like Toy Story 5, Michael, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, each crossing the $1 billion mark.
Recent releases such as Brand New Day and The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan’s interpretation of the Greek epic poem, are also projected to exceed the $1 billion milestone.
