Colombo: The Defence Ministry, in a recent media briefing, addressed the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Indian fishermen involved in illegal fishing activities within Sri Lankan waters. The incident, which resulted in the arrest of 13 Indian fishermen, occurred after they breached the country’s maritime borders and disregarded the lawful orders of the Sri Lankan Navy.

According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, the apprehension took place when the Northern Naval Command spotted a group of Indian fishing boats off the Valvettithurai area in Jaffna on January 27. The Navy initiated a special operation to expel these boats from Sri Lankan waters, during which one fishing vessel with its crew was seized. The Navy’s boarding team conducted a noncompliance boarding as the Indian fishermen aggressively maneuvered their vessel and resisted orders.

During the operation, the Indian fishermen reportedly acted in a hostile manner, attempting to seize weapons from the naval personnel. This confrontation led t
o an accidental discharge of a firearm, injuring two fishermen. Both injured individuals received immediate first aid and were transported to Jaffna Teaching Hospital, where they are in stable condition. The Navy has filed a complaint with the Kankesanthurai Police regarding the incident.

The Indian fishing boat and its crew were taken to the Kankasanthurai harbour on January 28 and handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for further legal proceedings. This incident follows previous occurrences of illegal poaching by fishermen in Sri Lankan waters, with the Navy taking action to secure the maritime borders and protect the local fishing community.

The briefing, attended by high-ranking officials including the Secretary of Defence, highlighted the continuous efforts by the Sri Lanka Navy to prevent such illegal activities. The Defence Secretary also mentioned the successful implementation of weapons inspection policies, ensuring security measures are based on current intelligence assessments.
