Colombo: The Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, H.E. ISOMATA Akio, met the Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd) at his office in Colombo on 24 March 2026.
According to Ministry of Defence – Sri Lanka, during this meeting, several important aspects of bilateral cooperation were discussed, which included the policy for Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP). The Ambassador highlighted its core principles of ensuring freedom of navigation, promoting free trade, enhancing transport connectivity, and upholding a rule-based international order.
Another key focus of the discussion was Japan’s Official Security Assistance (OSA) framework. The Ambassador underscored that OSA is not a one-time initiative but a sustained commitment by Japan to support partner nations. In this regard, he noted that further discussions are expected for the fiscal year 2026 under the OSA framework.
The Ambassador also highlighted the role of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation in promoting defence-related exchanges, aimed at enhancing professional cooperation and knowledge sharing between the two countries.
Additionally, the Deputy Minister highlighted the positive outcomes of the Sri Lankan delegation’s recent visit to Japan and conveyed appreciation for the Government of Japan’s enduring friendship and continued support.
